A Word About Ghosts

Aside from dressing up as one for Halloween as a child, I never had much interest in ghosts. That is not to say that I didn’t believe in their existence, rather that I just didn’t know. I didn’t see ghosts, so I didn’t think much about them. I have had a couple experiences, prior to my training in this work, that I would say definitely hinted that they were among us.
The first of these occurred while living with a boyfriend in Shawnee Mission, Kansas during my college years. For some months, we experienced odd electrical activity. First, the tv in the living room turned itself on while we were sleeping in another room. This happened several times over the course of a few weeks. Then, one night, the vcr turned on (yep, this was back before dvds, blue rays and streaming) and proceeded to eject the tape that was in it, then suck it back in. It did this over and over until we finally got up and took the tape out and shut it off. Weird, right?
A few weeks after this, my boyfriend started having nightmares. These kept going for several weeks. It got to the point that he was barely sleeping. He screamed himself awake most nights. I felt terrible for him. I felt helpless. Now let me also interject that despite being dragged to church in my early years, I am not a religious person – which is not to say that I don’t believe…in something. So, one night I decided to ask the universe for a favor. With all of the love that I felt for this person, I asked that I be allowed to take his pain away just for a night. There was a real purity to my quest, I wanted to do this out of love. (Please don’t do this at home, I didn’t know then what I know now. We should never invite something with that kind of energy into our sleep state or our energy in any way). I can tell you that it worked so well that I still remember it to this day (25 years later). That night, I had truly terrifying dreams. It was a horror show that I woke from screaming and sweating over and over. He slept like a baby. Lucky for us both it wasn’t just for one night. The nightmares didn’t return for either of us and neither did the ghost activity.
Many years later, I had what I would call a ghost visitation that I am not sure was waking or dream. In the days following the death of my brother in law (who I had never met), I saw him standing in our bedroom as we slept. He was near the foot of the bed on my husband’s side. He didn’t say anything, but I had the distinct impression that he was there to make sure that my husband was ok.
Neither of these experiences made enough of an impact on me that I thought I would ever be interested or able to get in touch with a ghost and actually aid in its journey to the other side. Well, life is nothing if not surprising. When we came to the section in my energetic education I’ll call “Let’s talk to ghosts” I discovered that I had a talent for contacting, listening and helping them to move on.
I have since performed this service for several of the living to relieve their homes of unwanted guests. I will interject that ghosts are usually the most benign of the unwanted things inhabiting spaces but that is a topic for another day. Ghosts are generally unable to actually create physical disturbances on their own, but they can certainly make a space feel wrong. Uninviting. Depressed. Animals can definitely see them (maybe not all animals, but certainly cats can and some dogs). Even if they don’t see them, ghosts can make pets uneasy.
I am still not someone who attracts ghosts or even feels them unless I am looking for them. But when I make an earnest effort, I can find them. Most of the ones I encounter are simply confused. They may not realize they are ghosts. Some know it and really resist what comes with moving on. Life review can be difficult if you have a lot to answer for. But it doesn’t last forever and when you’re done you get to rejoin your soul and move on to the next adventure.
